Recent releases include Aapki Niyat, Sonam Kapoor’s Blind and Huma Qureshi’s Tarla Rahi. Three big heroine-oriented films in a week, how are you seeing this change?
I am very happy that there are three women-oriented films releasing this week. The interesting thing is that all these three films are different. When I did Ishqiya in 2010, I felt that such heroine oriented films are rare in a career. But after that, this trend gradually changed. But I think, the road ahead is even longer. Especially after the Pandemic, when films are not able to do well at the box office, then the first loss reaches to the women centric films. They say that people are not coming to watch women-centric films, although they are not coming to watch male-centric films, so they think that if their films are not working, then the chances of these women-oriented films are less, then Kainchi Jahan But the same goes on, so this is the time, when we have to make more different types of films, because people want to see something new.

You have said in your interview that the producers and directors had termed you Panauti, then when did the turning point of your career come?
My first turning point came when I met Dada (Pradeep Sarkar) for Parineeta. Although that role was also offered to other actresses. But he had faith in me that I am the right choice for that film. It was his first film and he was not in a position to be adamant about casting me at that time, but still he was adamant that I wanted Vidya to play the same Lolita. It was a big deal for me that he believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I had started considering myself as Panauti. During that time my first Bengali film Bhalo Theko came and then I felt nahi, main panauti nahi hoon. After that film, my broken confidence was back.

Today you have made your mark as an actress and woman, but have you ever had to go through self-doubt? When did you accept your physicality?
I still feel the self-doubt. Yes, it is less than before, because I have done some work, have seen some success. According to me self-doubt is natural as well as necessary. If there is no self-doubt, then you will not work day and night to prove yourself. Many times I doubt whether I am taking the right decision while choosing the film. Sometimes you do not understand whether the film is good or not, because you are so attached to the film that you do not feel bad. After a time, people only speak well of you, so in such a situation the identity of right and wrong also gets blurred. As far as accepting my own physicality is concerned, it started with The Dirty Picture and that acceptance of myself has only grown since then. Although I don’t always like myself. Sometimes I can’t make myself feel great.

Today we see that women’s sexuality is being talked about on OTT, otherwise till yesterday she was considered a hawa?
This change has not come only because of OTT, yes it has definitely got a boost from OTT. You were not as comfortable watching female sexuality on screen in a theater among three hundred people as you are in your room on OTT. Today the needs of women are being talked about. We women are slowly taking the reins of our lives in our own hands. I had read a book long ago, in which it was written that there is a tradition in our country where women together sing dirty songs in close groups. Instead of calling those songs dirty, it would be better to call them sex oriented. She used to express her sexuality in that way, so it’s nothing new. Our body is an integral part of us women. We are first seen, judged, appreciated for our bodies.

When did you feel most proud, being a girl and an actress?
When I met my family after the screening of The Dirty Picture. First of all my father started clapping. I felt very proud at that time, because I felt that I did not let my father feel inferior that oh, what has his daughter done? Very high thinking, my father.

The brightness of your face is telling that you are happy with your married life. How has your relationship with your husband Siddharth Roy Kapur improved in the last ten years?
We will be married for 11 years in December. An understanding has developed between us, but as far as Siddharth is concerned, I am very childish with him. Even now I tease him about how much he thought of me during the day. How many times has he remembered me today? See, with the passage of time, me and Siddharth have started accepting each other more.

What was your shy husband Siddharth’s reaction when you told him recently that you were physically attracted to him and it was lust at first sight?
I meant to say that any relationship starts from there. That is the origin of nature. When you see someone, first you are impressed by his outer look. It starts from there. At first you are physically attracted, then you get to know them. When I met him for the first time, I felt that he is such a secure man.
