Mumbai Actor Vijay Varma has challenged the stereotypical notion of being an “asli mard” or a “real man” in a patriarchy-ridden society. He stressed on the need to break free from the rule book of manhood and adopt a more inclusive and empathetic definition of manhood.
In the teaser of his next ‘Kaalkoot’, Vijay is seen holding a book titled ‘Asli Mard’. The first rule he shared is that a ‘real man’ does not apply cream face wash, body moisturiser, and if a ‘real man’ does, his masculinity is questioned.
He reveals the second rule, where he says that a real man doesn’t cry. Third, he points out that women can cover themselves if they want, as he says in the teaser, “Hamara to khoon hi garam hai. Kisi ke kaaboo mein nahi, hum jazbaat mein bahete jo apni marzi chalaiye sab par, mard usi ko toh kehta hai.”
Actor Vijay Verma says that we follow these rules throughout our life to become a real man but get away from others. Wonder what we find. In the process of becoming a real man, we lose our humanity. It’s time to change and let’s change the rule book.
Vijay portrays a similar ideology on screen as Ravi Tripathi in the crime drama ‘Kalkoot’.
Through the intriguing story of ‘Kaalkoot’, the show also seeks to delve into how societal norms and systemic oppression contribute to heinous crimes. It lies in dismantling toxic masculinity and challenging deeply entrenched patriarchal values.
‘Kalkoot’ streams on Geosimema on 27th July. (IANS)
