In an effort to remain in the race for the Paris Olympics, star wrestler Vinesh Phogat did not allow the selection trials in women’s 50 kg and 53 kg categories to begin and sought written assurance from the officials that the final trials of the 53 kg weight category would be held before the Olympics.

Vinesh, who had leveled allegations of sexual harassment against former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and led the long-running protest, had reached the SAI center here for the trials in the 50 kg category. Before the performance, she used to compete in 53 kg category but due to Panghal getting the quota last in that category, she reduced her weight category.

Vinesh did not allow the competition to start, demanding written assurance. He sought permission to compete in both 50 kg and 53 kg, which led to an awkward situation. Due to this, the wrestlers in the 50 kg weight category started complaining. He said, “We have been waiting for two and a half hours. The ad-hoc committee constituted by the IOA has already said that there will be a final trial for the 53 kg category in which the top four wrestlers of this weight category will compete. The winner of the trials will have to compete in the finals and the winning wrestler will represent India.

A coach present during the trial said, “Vinesh wants assurance from the government.” He fears that if WFI comes back to power, the selection policy may change. But how can the government give assurance on this? The government cannot interfere in selection matters.” He said, ”Maybe she wants to secure her future. If she loses in the 50 kg trials, she wants to ensure that she remains in the race in the 53 kg trials as well.
