Last year ‘The Kashmir Files’ was a blockbuster and recently ‘The Kerala Story’ did well at the box office. About a dozen such films will be released in the next few years. What would you say on this?
Discretion: I don’t say anything about this. We don’t care who is doing what. We just do our job, that’s what I mean. But I know that when something is popular, people feel that this trend is going on nowadays, so let’s wash our hands in the flowing Ganga on this pretext. Then, in the midst of all this, mediocre and shoddy work also comes to the fore. Then those things keep going down and other things start coming up. While we make one thing then shift to another thing. Earlier we made a film on genocide, now we are making a film on science. After this we are making Delhi Files film on another unique subject. After that maybe make something else.
Pallavi: Javed Akhtar sahab had said a very good thing. He was asked about Sholay and Deewar that these are formula films, everyone uses this formula in their films. Then he said that when we made the film, we did not think that it is a formula film. We wrote what we wrote with complete honesty. Now it has become a formula film and many films like it have started coming, so what should we do. So we also never think that we will make a trend setting film. The subject about which we feel that it should come in front of the people, then we make a film on that subject. In future also, those who want to make any kind of film, only they should know this.
Your film Vaccine War was earlier scheduled to release on 15th August. Was it extended because of your web series Kashmir Files Unreported?
Pallavi: Yes and no, both can say. Since we are not a huge production house, we focus on one thing at a time. But this time we were on two boats. Work was going on both webseries and ‘Vaccine War’. But ‘Vaccine War’ is a film from a different field. I don’t think anyone in India has ever made a film like this on science before. So we had to do a lot of research regarding that. Science is a very alien territory for artists. For example, in our everyday life, we use medical terminology a lot, but we use very little scientific terminology. So we remember the dialogues that we had to say through this film, but it is a big terminology, so the actors had to sound the same. Many problems also came in this. We also had to create a lot of special effects. Along with this, the work of web series was also going on. So we felt we have to push the film by about a month. Right now we are thinking of releasing the film in September.
When one of your films does well, the expectations from the second film are even higher. Are you feeling something like this too?
Pallavi: Look, the pressure is only of the box office. People, every producer or every star feel that if this film of mine has become a hit, then my next film should also be a bigger hit than that. This is the whole business of Bollywood films, that whole business is that every Friday there will be bidding and on that basis your stardom will be decided. We are not in that game. We never tried to find out whether our film is a hit or a flop. If we were to do such things, where would the fans of Buddha in a Traffic Jam come from? If we thought so, how could ‘Tashkent Files’ become the biggest sleeper hit ever. If we had thought like this then after ‘Kashmir Files’ we should have worked with big stars. Had there been box office pressure on us, we would have made The Kashmir Files 2 because so many people wanted it. But we have moved into a completely different zone. Right now we are making a film on science.

Discretion : The pressure is on whoever is in that race. A person who completes a 100 meter race in, say, 10 seconds, is under pressure to complete it in 9 seconds. But someone who is not in competition and just runs to enjoy his health or nature, then what difference does it make if he runs 6 km one day and 2 km the other day. For him running is more important.
There are general elections next year. It is said that cinema has an effect on the mind of the people. Your films Vaccine War and Delhi Files will release during this period. If you are accused of influencing elections with your films, how will you deal with it?
Discretion: What is the time in India when there is no election. Elections are held here all the time. In such a situation, which film would you stop? Every film is giving some or the other message. Now because of the fear that elections are going on, you will not stop making films. You should ask the politicians that the Delhi files of Saheb Vivek Sir are coming, so you should not hold elections. Otherwise you will get profit or loss.
