‘Kohra’ is the story of two Punjab Police officers, Balbir Singh and Amarpal Garundi. Both investigate the death of an NRI. This NRI had gone to the countryside to get married, but a day before the wedding, his dead body is found in the evening. As the story progresses, it turns into a mystery drama revolving around deception, deep dark secrets and a shattered family.

‘Paatal Lok’ and ‘NH10’ fame Sudeep Sharma is the co-creator of the show. ‘Kohra’ with 6 episodes has also been directed by ‘Halahal’ fame Randeep Jha. It is a thriller that explores the dark secrets of rural areas in Punjab. Though the pace of the screenplay by Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia is a bit slow, it manages to keep the audience interested throughout the series. In the series, we get a close look at various aspects of the rural society of Punjab. Migration is common there. The series also delves into feudal infighting, drugs, and the lives of inherited landowners. The show talks about breaking free from darkness, creating a society and community where honesty, empathy is the need of the hour.

The series begins with a dead body found in Jagrana village of Punjab. Two dedicated police officers from Punjab, Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky) and Amarpal Garundi (Barun Sobti) are handling the investigation. As they delve deeper into the matter, they come to know that the victim is an NRI who has returned to her village to get married. News of the murder spreads quickly, putting pressure on the police to solve the case. As the family begins to interrogate, a tangle of secrets and lies unfold. With each clue, the further Balbir and Garundi dig in, the deeper the mystery deepens.

This six episode series proves to be the best in the art of storytelling. Apart from interrogations and investigations, the series also offers glimpses into the lives of different sections of the society. It also depicts the struggle of influential but unhappy men, helpless mothers and the desperation of the younger generation. It shines a light on the dark truths that are hidden due to social constraints and all the lies that keep the family together.

The performance of every actor is commendable. In this, Suvinder Vicky has played the character of policeman Balbir Singh with complete authenticity. His character has a troubled personal life. He also has a daughter Nimrat (Harleen Sethi). Barun Sobti, who plays Balbir’s sidekick Garundi, though finds it a bit difficult to speak Punjabi, but once he hits the ground running, he is a force to be reckoned with. All the actors including Varun Badola, Manish Chowdhary and Rachael Shailee, Manish Chowdhary have done their work with utmost sincerity.

Most of the shooting of ‘Kohra’ has been done in Ludhiana and its surrounding areas. Saurabh Monga’s cinematography adds a genuine feel to the series. The background score by Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandravarkar helps to add tension to the atmosphere.

The climax of ‘Kohra’ promises a second season without any doubt. But the good thing is that the story has been ended at such a point where you get satisfaction. When the truth comes out at the end of the series, you as a viewer feel relieved.

Why see- On the whole, ‘Kohra’ is a well-crafted crime thriller worth watching. It draws you in as a viewer. The story telling style keeps you hooked. In the rural areas of Punjab, it not only deals with the dark secrets but also with the problems.
