Sports shooting involves using a firearm (gun) to aim a bullet at a target. These can be stationary targets or moving targets known as clays.

When was shooting included in the Olympics?

Shooting has been a permanent sport in the modern Olympic Games. Which was not included only in the 1904 and 1928 games. From 5 events at its inaugural event in 1896 to 15 events across 6 disciplines today, the sport has grown rapidly with advances in firearm technology.

Types of shooting and what are the rules?

There are three categories of shooting based on the gun used. First rifle, pistol and shotgun. There are 3 events in rifle, 6 in pistol and 3 in shotgun.

rifle event

  • In 50 meter rifle three positions, men have to fire 40-40 rounds while kneeling, lying and standing, while women have to fire 20-20 rounds.
  • 60 shots have to be fired while lying prone in a 50 meter rifle.
  • Shooting in 10 meter air rifle has to be done while standing. Men have to fire 60 rounds and women have to fire 40 bullets.

pistol events

  • There are 6 events in pistol. In which 50 meters are for men and 60+20 rounds have to be fired in it.
  • 25 meter is for girls and in this 30-30 bullets have to be fired in rapid fire.
  • In 25 meter rapid fire, a shooter fires at five targets at different times. This is an event for men.
  • 25 meter center fire is also a men’s event in which 60 bullets have to be fired in two rounds.
  • 25 meter standard pistol is also for men only. In this, 20 rounds have to be fired at different times in 3 rounds.
  • In 10 meter air pistol, men have to shoot 60 rounds and women have to shoot 40 rounds.

shotgun

  • trap- The shooter has to fire by keeping the gun straight at the target.
  • In double trap, two birds (fake) have to be targeted.
  • In skeet, birds fly from two different directions which have to be shot.

India has hope in 2024 Paris Olympics

In Paris Olympics 2024, India is hoping for a medal from Sarabjot Singh in 10 meter air rifle, Arjun Babuta in 10 meter men’s air rifle and Trilotma Sen in women’s 10 meter air rifle.

While Manu Bhakar is expected to win a medal in the women’s 25 meter pistol, Anees Bhanwala is expected to win a medal in the men’s 25 meter rapid fire pistol. Sriyanka Sadangi is hopeful of a medal in women’s 50 meter rifle 3 positions.
