Advisory for monitoring regarding Covid

Corona JN.1 variant in India: Amidst the increase in cases of Covid infection and the detection of the first case of the new JN-1 variant in the country, the Center has issued an advisory for surveillance regarding Covid. The Union Health Ministry has asked all the states to remain alert. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called a meeting of state health ministers on Wednesday to review the preparedness in view of the rise in respiratory diseases including Covid-19 in the country.

Continuous monitoring up to state and district level

The Central Government has asked the states and union territories to maintain constant surveillance. It has been said in the advisory that the state and district level should continuously monitor the situation of Covid.

Increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in some states like Kerala

Recently, an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases has been recorded in some states like Kerala. Keeping in mind the festival season in the coming days, states have been advised to take necessary public health measures and other arrangements to reduce the risk of spread of the disease.

Ensure monitoring and reporting

The advisory has asked States to ensure district-wise monitoring and reporting of cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe respiratory illness (SARI) in all health facilities to quickly detect rising trends of cases.

RT-PCR and Antigen Testing

States were also advised to ensure adequate testing as per the COVID-19 testing guidelines in all districts and maintain the prescribed number of RT-PCR and antigen tests.

First case of JN.1 sub-variant BA.2.86 found in Kerala

The first case of JN.1 sub-variant BA.2.86 in India was recently found in Kerala. There is a new sub-variant of COVID-19 sub-variant JN-1 (also known as Pirola). It is an off-shoot of the fast-spreading Omicron variant. Experts have warned that it is more immune resistant. It was identified as a variant of interest by WHO scientists in November. The JN.1 variant has also been reported in the United States, China and Singapore.

Covid-19 vaccines expected to protect against JN.1

According to the government, there is no indication of increased severity from JN.1 or the risk posed by its subvariants to public health compared to other variants currently circulating. Government says COVID-19 vaccines are expected to increase protection against JN.1,
