As per the previous SW19 rules, all players participating in the competition were strictly prohibited from wearing any color other than white. It was a condition that in 2014 forced some female participants to go braless. The new rule now allows female players to choose their preferred color of underwear with the aim of reducing period paranoia.
On this rule, Ons Zebeur of Tunisia said, ‘First thing, it is certainly better that you are not paranoid. Secondly, everyone will know that you are on your period. That’s why I don’t know which part of this rule is good.
She further said, ‘I don’t think I will wear anything. If all the girls wore them, I think it would be better. But I think it’s a good thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court.’
The All England Club announced the new rule in November, as chief executive Sally Bolton said: “We hope this rule change will help players focus on their performance by relieving anxiety.”
