World Boxing Championships: Indian men’s team leaves for Tashkent for practice camp

Six-time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa and 2019 Asian Championships silver medalist Deepak Bhoria will lead the Indian challenge at the World Championships. In the World Championship, the gold medalist will get $200,000 while the silver medalist will get $100,000 and the bronze medalist will get $50,000.
India’s 19-member men’s boxing team on Monday left for Tashkent for a training camp ahead of the April 30-May 14 World Championship. Six-time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa and 2019 Asian Championships silver medalist Deepak Bhoria will lead the Indian challenge at the World Championships. In the World Championship, the gold medalist will get $200,000 while the silver medalist will get $100,000 and the bronze medalist will get $50,000.
India will have 13 boxers participating in the World Championships but six other boxers have also been included in the squad for training camps to be held in several countries. These include 2018 Asian Games gold medalist Amit Panghal. So far 640 boxers from 104 countries have registered for the championship to be held in Tashkent. They also include seven current world champions, including Sophian Oumiha of France, Tomoya Tasuboi and Sivonerets Okazawa of Japan, Loren Alphonso of Azerbaijan, Saken Bibosinov of Kazakhstan and Yonelis Hernandez Martinez and Julio La Cruz of Cuba.
Two Indian boxers each in six weight categories – 51kg, 57kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg and 92kg – will participate in the training camp. The reserve boxers have also gone with the main team.
