Increasing the intake of salt and sugar is not good for health. Excessive consumption of sugar and salt in today’s lifestyle is silently promoting a health crisis, which has a direct impact on our hearts. Studies show that excessive sugar and salt consumption pose a threat to our heart health.

Sugar has been an integral part of the Indian diet. In view of changing lifestyle, its consumption has increased. Excessive sugar consumption can have a direct impact on our heart health. When we consume too much sugar, our body struggles to process it efficiently. Over time, this can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where our cells become less responsive to insulin, the hormone responsible for controlling blood sugar. When we consume too much salt, it causes excess fluid to accumulate in our body, which increases blood volume and puts extra pressure on our arteries. Over time, this constant pressure on our arteries can damage them, making it easier for cholesterol and plaque to build up on their walls. This, in turn, can lead to atherosclerosis, a condition where the arteries become narrow and hard, reducing blood flow to the heart.

It is necessary to take active steps to protect our hearts. Although it’s challenging to eliminate sugar completely, try to cut down on sugary snacks, beverages and sweets and choose healthier alternatives like fresh fruits.

Read labels: Check food labels for hidden sugars. Sugar is often known by different names, such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose. Take care of these ingredients.

Reduce salt intake: Watch your salt intake by using less salt during cooking and at the table. Also, avoid processed foods.

Choose fresh foods: Choose fresh, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains.

Exercise regularly: Engage in physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of insulin resistance and belly fat.

Regular Checkups: Schedule regular checkups with your healthcare provider to monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and overall heart health.
