Busto Arsizio, March 9 (Hindustan Reporter) World Championship bronze medalist Mohammad Hussamuddin suffered defeat in the ongoing first World Olympic Boxing Qualifier in Busto Arsizio, Italy on Saturday. Hussamuddin suffered a 4-0 defeat against reigning Commonwealth Games champion 22-year-old Jude Gallagher of Ireland in the 57kg category. The 30-year-old Hussamuddin, a two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, had received a bye in the first round.
After his exit, Nishant Dev remains the only Indian to remain in the race to clinch an Olympic quota for the country. A total of nine Indian boxers participated in the Busto Arsizio meet. Nishant Dev, also a World Championships bronze medallist, will be in action in his round of 16 match in the men’s 71kg category late on Sunday night.
More than 590 boxers are taking part in the first World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament. The tournament will provide a total of 49 quotas for the 2024 Paris Olympics, including 28 for men and 21 for women. There will be four quotas on offer in the weight categories, except for women’s 57kg (two quotas) and women’s 60kg (three quotas).
Women boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) had secured quotas for India in the Asian Games last year. Each country can qualify for a maximum of one quota per weight category for the Paris Olympics.
