History of World Post Day
A system was introduced in England in the year 1840. Under this system, all postal letters had to be paid for in advance i.e. prepaid. This system was started by Sir Rowland Hill. In this system, a category was fixed for domestic service along with prepaid payment for letters, in which the same rate was charged for all letters of equal weight. Not only this, Sir Rowland Hill also introduced the world’s first postage stamp.

Every year World Post Day is celebrated on 9 October. The main objective of celebrating this is to provide information about the postal department to the customers, make them aware and establish harmony between the post offices. This day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in the year 1874 in Bern, Switzerland. Our country also became a member of the Universal Postal Union on July 1, 1876. India is the first country in Asia to take this membership. On October 1, 1854, the Government of India had established a department for posts.
