The Indian women’s team defeated Uzbekistan in the World Table Tennis Team Championship on Monday but the men’s team suffered its second consecutive defeat against hosts South Korea. India defeated Uzbekistan 3-0 despite Ayhika Mukherjee and Srija Akula being rested.
Archana Kamat and Diya Chitale took advantage of the opportunity and won their matches while senior teammate Manika Batra also won, giving India a 3-0 win. Archana defeated Rima Gufranov 11-7, 11-3, 11-6 while Manika defeated Markhabo Magdieva 11-7, 11-4, 11-1. Diya ensured India’s victory by defeating Rosalina Khadjieva 11-6, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6 in a tough match. The Indian women’s team, which started its campaign with a 2-3 defeat against China, is in second place in Group One after two consecutive wins.
In its final match of Group One, the team will face Spain on Tuesday. The team had defeated Hungary 3-2 in the last match. In the men’s category, veteran Sharath Kamal, defending national champion Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan lost their singles matches as India suffered a lopsided 0-3 defeat in their third group stage match against third-seeded Korea. India’s top player Harmeet, ranked 67th in the world, suffered a 4-11, 10-12, 8-11 defeat against world number 14 Jang Woojin. After this, Sathiyan lost against world number 16 Lim Jonghoon 5-11, 7-11, 7-11, leaving India 0-2 down.
Sharath won the second game against Lee San Su but failed to maintain the momentum and lost 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11. After winning the opening match against Chile, the Indian team lost 1-3 to Poland.
