New Delhi . Actress and model Poonam Pandey died of cervical cancer. She was 32 years old. After this, doctors have said that cervical cancer vaccine is necessary for Indians.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indian women, accounting for about 18 percent of all cancers in this demographic group.
According to a recent study published in The Lancet Global Health Journal, one in five or 21 percent of cervical cancer cases occur in India. Cancer is the cause of almost one out of every four deaths in the country i.e. 23 percent.
Dr. Sunny Jain, Senior Consultant and HOD – Oncology, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, said, “Cervical cancer vaccine protects and protects women from HPV virus induced carcinoma cervix. We are happy that the government is making strong efforts towards cancer prevention. This includes cervical cancer vaccination for girls aged 9-14 years.
While presenting the interim budget on Thursday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the government will promote vaccination of girls aged 9 to 14 years for the prevention of cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is linked to human papillomavirus and vaccines can prevent it. Therefore, according to health experts, cervical cancer vaccine is a very important life-saving measure against this disease.
