Yami Gautam: Because of Vidya Balan, Yami Gautam revealed her skin disease! Now opened a deep secret

Yami won a lot of accolades for your gray role in your last film Thursday. What is the gray side of your personality?
When I was studying sociology in high school, we were told how we should live in the society? Then I thought what is the need to define it. But then I understood that there is a need, because we are different in different roles, so I also have flaws. I get angry too. I am also hyper at times, but my anger lasts for a short time. I do not take out my anger anywhere else. Earlier I used to be a little patient, but now I have lost a little patience. My one major drawback was that I used to over read. I used to know everything in the exam, but I used to leave one important question because I could not read it. I got 98 out of 100 in Biology and when I asked my professor why two marks came less, she told that I had left that answer in the wake of studying more. Sometimes when I get messages, I read something more or different. Once I read the message of the birthday and reached the venue with all my might, but there was silence, when I read the message again, I saw that it was the next day’s event.

After ‘Dasvin’, ‘Lost’, ‘Thursday’ on OTT, you are now seen in ‘Aap Chor Nikal Kar Bhaga’, how much OTT proved to be a game changer for you?
‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga’ is my sixth film on OTT and I believe this platform boomed when it was most needed. The entire business had come to a standstill due to the pandemic. Big films were stuck. Technicians were worried and then OTT came as a boon. But in the past years, OTT has become a habit of people and they feel that they will watch this film on OTT, but being a cinema lover, I believe that the charm of watching movies in theaters is something else. Watching a movie used to be a family event, when the whole family would dress up and go to the theater and eat popcorn and samosas. It used to be very expensive, yet people used to spare both time and money, the fun of it was something else. But then came a parallel platform where the entire world content came in your hands. I am very thankful to OTT because my films got an audience. But now a clear line has been drawn between cinema and OTT. If it is a big budget film, then it will go to the theatre, but whether it is a mid budget or low budget film, even if it is entertaining, there is a dilemma whether to display it in the theatre? Will the audience come? Nowadays, the scale of earning of films has also changed, in such a situation, we do not understand how to judge our work? To be honest, there is no discrimination in the minds of us artists regarding our work whether it is film or OTT. Now it is the decision of the producers that where they release the film, as the money is ultimately theirs.

Your characters have become strong on screen, but being a woman you also look strong? Where does that strength come from? You spoke openly about your skin disease keratosis pilaris.
I guess that strength comes with experience. What have you felt with yourself, inside yourself, over the years? and kept it alive within itself. Even 5 years back, I did not have that confidence. Many things used to happen in the mind, to speak, but then it seems, lest someone gets hurt, something goes wrong, what would someone think? Sometimes our conditioning is done in such a way that you cannot speak. But then after years I felt that today if I have got such a platform, I have that experience and people will listen, understand and many others will be inspired to share their thoughts, so why not? Why don’t I have my say? We evolve with the times. I myself have evolved. I had read an interview of Vidya ma’am (actress Vidya Balan) and in that she had said, success is considered only when you get it by being yourself. So after reading many such interviews, I felt that I can speak my mind. Only then I could talk about skin diseases. Though I had this disease in my teenage, but when you are in the glamor industry, you have endorsements, you are expected to look a certain type, things are different for you. Whatever I talked to myself about my skin type in my social media, it comes after time. In this subject I This speaking did not happen overnight. Everyone would look at the little pimples on my skin and say, oh what is this? We have to cover it, conceal it. I can understand, why would they say that? But when I revealed that personal shoot through my social media, I felt very light. I thought it was me. After that the kind of comments I got, from both boys and girls, were worth reading. Girls wrote that their boyfriends used to boast that the skin of such and such an actress looks special, why not yours? And we couldn’t tell them? But you have now disclosed this on your social media, so we are relieved that the skin condition may be different. This is normal.

You have embodied many strong women in films and on OTT. But what do you consider to be the biggest difficulty of women in real life?
We are very fortunate, who can speak their mind, discuss different issues, but there are many women in our society who cannot say anything. Although the challenges of women of every class, age, cast and section are different, but I want that every woman should be respected for her work. Whether you are a journalist, a doctor, an actress or a homemaker, you should be respected for your work. No one should take a woman for granted. Now as our industry is considered male dominated, but I think education can change the attitude towards women. it will take time. It should start from when the boys are growing up in their homes.

Yami is married to Aditya Dhar

How much has marriage (filmmaker Aditya Dhar) shaped you?
Aditya Dhar is another name of marriage for me. I don’t even realize that soon we will be married for two years. Aditya always asks me why I say so much about him in every interview that people ask him about me too. To be honest, that’s all I have to say about him. In fact he is such a nice person. He also struggled a lot in his life, saw many ups and downs, but still his journey did not change him. They say that every human being has an essence and he has not lost it. He is a very nice and genuine person. Do not hold any bitterness towards anyone. They are very cheerful and keep the atmosphere pleasant. After leaving the meeting, he would say laughing, what should I make? What do you want to eat? You rest. I just make Although I am doing rest only. (Laughs) He balances everything very beautifully. I am very happy with him.
