Is it just a coincidence that he suddenly turned to yoga while being a mechanical engineer?

In the year 1965-66, I was doing my doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. Then I asked myself that what I am doing, will it take me in the right direction? At that time our professor Satyanarayan Shastri became my guide. He introduced me to the scientific aspect of yoga. While continuing the research of mechanical engineering, I learned Sanskrit, acquired knowledge of Upanishads and started practicing yoga. With time it was realized that this is the right way to live life.

You are the founder of S-Vyasa. Honored with Yogashree and Padmashree. Tell us about the journey ahead of this?

My only goal is to spread yoga all over the world. Yoga has to be expanded especially in the field of health and education. Our present education system is inspired from western countries. As a result, terrorism, gun culture, tension, unrest, intoxication, diseases are increasing. America is an example of this. Unless we make yoga a part of our education system, these problems will continue.

Did you suggest International Yoga Day to the Prime Minister or did he take it from you?

International Yoga Day started from the year 2015. Whereas, Amrit Suryanand ji of Portugal used to celebrate ‘Yoga Day’ every year on 21st June in Portugal even before this. It was Amrit Suryanand ji who first told me that I should talk to the Prime Minister on this subject. On my request, when the Prime Minister proposed the International Day of Yoga in the UNO, surprisingly 178 countries supported it. The full credit of International Yoga Day goes to the Prime Minister. Modi ji himself has completely imbibed yoga. He sleeps only for four hours. Do yoga daily for one hour in the morning from 6:00 am to 7:00 am.

Are you working on any project with the central government to control diabetes through yoga?

It is better that we do not fall sick. I have suggested NITI Aayog to make such a health plan, so that people are made aware to avoid getting sick. Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan supported my suggestion and today more than 1.5 lakh health and wellness centers have been started across the country. Here people are being trained to stay fit and healthy through yoga.

Research is going on on the treatment of cancer through yoga. Will it be more effective than modern immunopathy?

We have been working on this topic for the last 25 years with the Cancer Research Center in Houston, Texas, USA. It includes both the subjects. First- Don’t let cancer happen. Second- the one who got cancer, how to reduce his pain and how to get well soon. There has also been success in this. As soon as that institute stamps the authenticity of the result of this research, it will become public.

How justified is the commercialization of yoga?

People should take the method of yoga seriously and it should reach maximum number of people through trained people, for this it is also necessary to commercialize it.

Did Baba Ramdev make yoga simple and accessible?

Exactly, Baba Ramdev has awakened the whole country through Yoga. Thousands of people used to reach his yoga camp at five in the morning.

What is S-Vyasa doing for quality yoga education?

300 branches of S-Vyasa are working all over the country. Apart from this, our trained students are giving yoga training in different parts of the country. Since 1978 at IICM in Ranchi, our instructors have been teaching yoga to people. Apart from this, on my advice, the Ministry of AYUSH has constituted the ‘Yoga Certification Board’. Under this, those taking yoga training from anywhere can get certificate by giving exams from level-1 to level-8. There is no compulsion of age and education for this.

Which project are you currently working on?

We worked on the prevention of diabetes. After that they were about to start a project on cancer, but the Prime Minister instructed that this time work on hypertension has to be done. That’s why we are currently running an awareness and training campaign regarding this.

What would you like to say about Ranchi?

I love Ranchi. I have a long association with this city. The weather of Bangalore and Ranchi is similar. I came here for the first time in the year 1977. Since then I have been coming here continuously. The Jharkhand chapter of the Indian Yoga Association and its associated members are very effectively engaged in the promotion of yoga. The team here is doing a great job. Hopefully because of this, there will be a chance to come here again.
