Mumbai: Opener Ibrahim Zadran credited Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar for giving him enough energy and confidence to score Afghanistan’s first century in the World Cup as he led his team to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on Tuesday. Helped set a competitive score of 291/5 against Australia in the match.

At the age of 21 years and 330 days, Zadran became the first batsman for Afghanistan and the fourth youngest batsman to score a century in the Men’s ODI World Cup, helping Afghanistan post their highest score in the World Cup.

Afghanistan has created a sensation in the World Cup 2023 by defeating defending champions England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as Netherlands and will have to defeat Australia and South Africa to reach the semi-finals.

On Tuesday, Zadran thanked Tendulkar for inspiring him to score a century on the great Indian batsman’s home ground. Tendulkar had visited the Afghanistan team before the match against Australia and interacted with the players.

“I had a good chat with Sachin Tendulkar; he shared his experience and I had said before the match that I will bat like Sachin Tendulkar; he gave me a lot of energy and confidence,” Zadran told the broadcaster during the innings break. ” His bat yielded 129 unbeaten runs in 143 balls.

The opener was delighted to score Afghanistan’s highest score in the World Cup after missing out on a century when he scored 87 against Pakistan at the start of the tournament.

Zadran said, “I feel very good to score the first century for Afghanistan in the (World Cup). I have worked really hard for this tournament, I missed out on scoring a century against Pakistan but scored a century today.” “

The 21-year-old player said that after missing out against Pakistan in Chennai a few weeks ago, he was feeling that he would get the three-figure score in this World Cup.

“I was talking to my coaching staff and I told them I think I will score centuries in the next three matches,” he said.

However, Zadran feels that had Afghanistan not lost a few wickets early in the middle overs, they could have crossed the 300-run mark. He said, we could have scored 330 runs.

He said, “The wicket is looking good, the ball is coming well. If we had made a good partnership and kept the wickets in hand, we would have scored 330 runs but we lost a few wickets and we did not get that kind of partnership. (We were looking for it) but Rashid played well in the end.” Afghanistan scored 96 runs in the last 10 overs.
