New Delhi. The Supreme Court has declined urgent hearing on a petition challenging the notifications regarding the Rs 2,000 note. In this petition, the notifications to change the 2,000 note without filling the slip and identity card have been challenged.
A vacation bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice KV Vishwanathan, after taking note of advocate Ashwini Upadhyay’s plea for urgent hearing, said it would not entertain such petitions during summer vacations.
“We are not hearing such matters during summer vacations,” the bench said. The court said the plea may be placed before a bench headed by the chief justice. Appealing to the counsel, the counsel said that Rs 2,000 notes are being exchanged by criminals and terrorists also without any slip and identity card.
He claimed that in a short span of time, banks have returned Rs 50,000 crore worth of notes of other denominations to customers in exchange of Rs 2,000 denomination notes.
Upadhyay has filed an appeal in the apex court against the May 29 judgment of the Delhi High Court. In this petition, he challenged the notification of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the State Bank of India (SBI) to exchange Rs 2,000 banknotes without any documents.
It is noteworthy that on May 19, the Reserve Bank of India had announced the withdrawal of 2,000 notes. These notes can be deposited in the bank account or exchanged for lower denomination notes till September 30. However, Rs 2,000 notes continue to be legal tender.
