Tata Steel and Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the company has laid off 38 employees. Of these, 35 employees have been fired for violating company rules while action has been taken against three for sexual misconduct. There were complaints against these employees for misuse of authority, conflict of interest and non-compliance of contract management agreements. Tata Steel took action against the employees after investigating these complaints.
Why increased complaints
Addressing the annual shareholders’ meeting of Tata Steel, Chandrasekaran said the company has acquired several companies over the years and is on a campaign to bring in an open culture. Employees can speak freely. They can talk about sexual harassment to violation of rules in the company. We are encouraging people to have their say. This has increased the number of complaints. In the last financial year, we received 875 complaints. Of these, 158 pertained to whistle blowers, 48 pertained to safety and 669 pertained to HR and behaviour.
Chandrasekaran said that as a company we are the global benchmark. Therefore, we will continuously develop a culture where we uphold high ethical values and will not tolerate any form of misconduct. He said that he is considering creating the post of Group Chief Safety Officer to oversee the safety aspects in all the group companies. Three weeks ago, 18 people were injured in an accident at Tata Steel’s Odisha plant. Chandrasekaran said that the focus is on safety in all the group companies and our aim is to achieve zero fatality in the group.
