New Delhi. Fuel demand has increased in the country in March. This information has been received from the initial data of the industry released on Sunday. According to the data, a pick-up in agricultural activities offset the sluggishness in fuel demand in the first fortnight of March. Fuel sales reached their highest level in February on a pick-up in transport following a sluggish winter season coupled with strong demand from the agriculture sector. But in the first fortnight of March (up to March 15), it saw a slowdown. However, fuel demand picked up in the second fortnight of the month and sales registered a month-on-month increase despite February’s higher base.

According to the data, petrol sales increased by 5.1 per cent to 2.65 million tonnes last month. On a monthly basis, sales have increased by 3.4 percent. Demand for diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country, increased by 2.1 per cent to 6.81 million tonnes during March. In the same period a year ago, 66.7 lakh tonnes of diesel was sold. On a monthly basis, the demand increased by 4.5 percent. Petrol sales fell by 1.4 per cent and diesel by 10.2 per cent year-on-year in the first fortnight. Petrol consumption in March was 16.2 percent more than March 2021 and about 43 percent more than March 2020. During this period, the consumption of diesel was 13.5 percent more than March 2021 and 41.8 percent more than March 2020.

With the steady opening up of the aviation sector, the number of air travelers has reached near pre-Covid levels. Due to this, the demand for aviation fuel (ATF) increased by 25.7 percent to 6,14,000 tonnes during March. It was 41.9 percent more than March 2021 and 34.8 percent more than March 2020. On a monthly basis, sales were higher by 4.54 percent. At the same time, the country’s oil demand was increasing steadily after the easing of restrictions related to the Kovid epidemic. According to the data, LPG sales fell three per cent year-on-year to 2.37 million tonnes in March. LPG consumption was nine per cent higher as compared to March 2021 and 5.8 per cent higher as compared to March 2020. On a month-on-month basis, demand declined by 6.54 percent. LPG consumption during February was 2.54 million tonnes on a monthly basis.
