Ahmedabad, 19 October (Hindustan Reporter). Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has fully commissioned the Warora-Kurnool Transmission (WKTL), spanning 1,756 circuit kilometers in Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This project will strengthen the National Grid to ensure uninterrupted power of 4500 MW between the Western Region and Southern Region. Additionally, this southern region will strengthen the grid and integrate generation from renewable energy sources on a large scale.
Warora Kurnool Transmission Limited (WKTL) was formed in April 2015 to establish an additional inter-regional alternating current link for import in the southern region, i.e. Warora-Warangal and Chilakaluripeta-Hyderabad-Kurnool, as well as in Warangal. To set up a sub-station with 765/400 KV presence. WKTL is the largest 765 kV D/C (hexa conductor) TBCB (tariff-based competitive bidding) project awarded so far under a single scheme. This included construction of a transmission line of 1756 CKM crossing the territory of Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, along with setting up of a 765 kilovolt sub-station at Warangal on ‘build, own, operate and maintain’ basis. . It was awarded to Essel Infraprojects Limited on Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) in early 2016 but was later acquired by AESL in March 2021 due to debt issues.
The large size of this project can be gauged from the fact that a total of 1,03,000 metric tonnes of steel has been used in erecting the towers. This is equivalent to the material required to build 10 Eiffel Towers. A total of 30,154 km of conductors have been used for these transmission lines, which is equivalent to circling the Moon three times.
It is an engineering marvel, in which two 102 meter high mid-stream towers with pile foundations were installed on the Krishna River for the first time. Planning was very important for this, as there was time for work only for three months during the year, when the water level in the river is low. Other challenges also included the construction of towers and the string of lines crossing 116 major power lines, railway-electrified tracks and national highways.
