AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), the largest integrated transport utility in India and a part of the diversified Adani Group, has crossed 300 MMT cargo handling in just 329 days as on February 23, 2023. The increase in the amount of cargo handled at the ports is a sign that the country’s economy is picking up. About 95 percent of the trade in India is done through sea transport. This means that ships do not have to wait longer at port as fertilizers are quickly removed from them, followed by rapid bagging and loading onto rakes with minimal wastage. The ability to quickly rotate rakes and vessels allows for year-round distribution of fertilizers to farmers.

The year also saw a rise in agricultural exports due to India’s record high food grain production and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which opened up opportunities for agricultural exports. Mundra Port recorded a record Ro-Ro exports – an 18 per cent growth due to long-time customer, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. APSEZ’s market leadership in the container business has been strengthened due to strategic partnerships with the world’s largest shipping lines such as MSC and CMA-CGM. Mundra Port alone has handled 3,508 commercial vessels, hosting the country’s largest container vessel APL Raffles and the deepest draft container vessel MSC Washington.

It is very economical to ship large quantities in a single shipment. APSEZ’s foresight to maintain Deep Draft Ports (Cape-enabled) enables its customers to bring large ship parcels, thereby reducing their overall logistics cost. Krishnapatnam Port has handled capsize vessel like MV NS Hairun which carries 165,100 MT of iron ore and leaves the port waters with a departure draft of 17.75 metres.

At a time when power demand in the country is at an all-time high, APSEZ has risen to the occasion and handled the sudden increase in the volume of imported coal arriving in India. In line with the government’s vision of RSR (Rail-Sea-Rail) movement of domestic coal, APSEZ has started offering coastal coal export solutions to TANGEDCO through its Gangavaram Port. Similarly, it is supporting movement of coastal coal to NTPC Khadgi by introducing coastal coal handling at its Mormugao terminal. Apart from expanding its business operations, ADHAI has also met its sustainability commitments. Energy and emissions intensity has decreased by about 41 percent and water intensity by 56 percent from 2016 levels. Electrification of Rubber Tired Gantry Crane (RTG) and Quay Crane has been completed.
