Agricultural scientists pay more attention to research in animal husbandry, fisheries

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Sunday asked agricultural scientists to conduct research in animal husbandry and fisheries to increase production and increase the overall agriculture sector. Addressing the program organized on the 95th Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through video conferencing, Tomar said that India ranks first or second in the world in terms of most crops. He said that the efforts of agricultural scientists as well as the farming community and policy initiatives taken by the governments have also contributed a lot in achieving this feat.
He said that in the last nine years, the Modi government has launched several programs to promote technology in the agriculture sector as part of its objective of increasing farm income. The Union Minister said that efforts have also been made for better productivity and production in agriculture and the focus has also been on improving the quality. Tomar said that Indian agricultural products are being accepted globally and hence annual agricultural exports have crossed $50 billion.
He asked the Council to fix targets for the 100th anniversary of ICAR after five years and start working to fulfill them. The minister said that animal husbandry and fisheries contribute more to the gross domestic product (GDP) of agriculture than crops.
