The company has said that the employees who were laid off were not able to make use of the Voluntary Retirement Scheme and the opportunities to develop fresh skills. Currently Air India has a total of 18,500 employees. Tata company says that the employees who have been fired are less than one percent of the total number of employees.
It is noteworthy that Tata Group’s Air India is running in loss. Tata took control of this company from the government in the year 2022. Since then, Tata Group is trying to bring Air India’s business back on track through various models and strategies. Tata is trying to bring Air India into profit.
An Air India spokesperson said that as part of the fitment process, employees engaged in non-flying tasks have been assigned roles based on organizational needs and individual merit. However, less than one percent of our employee base, who are not able to avail voluntary retirement or utilize skill development opportunities, are to separate from us, the spokesperson said in a statement. We are respecting all contractual obligations during this process.
Although the airline did not reveal how many employees have been laid off, sources said that more than 180 old employees have been affected. Air India employs approximately 18,000 employees. Let us tell you that this is not the first time that the airline has shown the way out to the employees. Earlier on March 12 also, 53 employees were shown the way out.
