Nipun Agarwal, Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer of Air India, says that the company has signed a deal with Airbus and Boeing to buy 840 aircraft over the next decade. In this, 470 aircraft will be purchased while the option to buy 370 aircraft is included. Air India has to phase out 113 old aircraft from its fleet. The interior of these aircraft is very bad and it causes inconvenience to the passengers. The condition of Air India as a government company was pathetic. The interior of these aircraft could not be updated due to paucity of funds. Refurbishing them is not easy given the constraints of the global supply chain.
non-stop flights to every city
Air India will be delivered 470 aircraft in the next 7-8 years. The airline will have an option to buy 370 aircraft when it retires its old aircraft. That is, the retirement of old aircraft will not affect the company’s fleet. Aggarwal said that this is a great moment in the history of Air India and India’s aviation. It started two years ago with the privatization process of Air India. We have also entered into long term deals with engine manufacturers CFM International, Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace.
Aggarwal said, “Tata Group wants to make Air India a world class airline and this order shows its commitment. Non stop flight will be started from India to every city of the world. Privatization of Air India has opened the doors of economic possibilities. According to the recently released data of aviation regulator DGCA, during July-September, 1.3 crore people came to India from abroad and went abroad from India. Out of these, 43.8% passengers traveled in Indian Airlines flights. During October-December 2019, before the Corona period, 29.2% of the 16 million international passengers traveled on Indian Airlines flights.
