New Delhi: Coming back to the Tata Group, the days of Air India have started turning around. The company has recently ordered 470 aircraft. Now the company is going to recruit more than 4,200 Cabin Crew Trainees and 900 Pilots this year. The airline has been adding new aircraft to its fleet and rapidly expanding its domestic and international operations. Earlier this month, the company had announced a mega order to buy 470 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus to support its growth schemes. Air India currently has 113 aircraft and 1600 pilots to operate them. There have been many occasions in the recent past when airlines have had to cancel or delay long-haul flights due to crew crunch.
Air India’s two subsidiaries, Air India Express and AirAsia India, have 54 aircraft and 850 pilots. Similarly, Tata Group’s joint venture Vistara has more than 600 pilots. Air India has announced plans to lease 36 aircraft out of which two B777-200LRs have already joined the fleet. The company says that the cabin crew will be recruited from across the country. Over the course of 15 weeks, they will be trained in safety and service skills as well as exposure to Indian hospitality and Tata Group culture.

The training program will include extensive classroom and in-flight training at the airline’s training facility in Mumbai as well as familiarization flights. Between May 2022 and February 2023, Air India has hired over 1900 cabin crew. Over 1,100 cabin crew have been trained in the last seven months (between July 2022 and January 2023) and around 500 cabin crew have been inducted into service in the last three months. Sandeep Verma, Head of Inflight Services, said that adding new talent will also accelerate the pace of cultural transformation in Air India.
