New Delhi: With the return of the Tata Group, the days of Air India have started turning around. The airline has placed an order for 840 aircraft. This is the biggest order in aviation history. Air India claims that soon non-stop flights will be started from India to every city in the world. This move of Air India has created panic in the aviation sector. The country’s largest airline Indigo has taken this challenge of Air India seriously. The airline has joined hands with Turkish Airlines to expand its footprint in Europe and has placed an order of around 500 aircraft. The airline operates around 1,800 flights daily. Of these, 10 per cent are on international routes. At present, Indigo’s share in the domestic market is 56.1 per cent while the combined share of the three Tata group airlines is 24.1 per cent. Other airlines hold 19.8 per cent stake. Airline companies of the Tata Group include Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India.

IndiGo CEO Peter Albers said that the company is now focusing on international routes. IndiGo is looking to start flights to Nairobi, Jakarta and some Central Asian destinations. Amid growing competition in the Indian market and Air India’s record order book, the IndiGo chief said the Indian market has huge potential for growth going forward and has room for multiple airlines. He said, ‘A lot is happening in the aviation sector of India. These include the consolidation of Air India Group. Overall, India’s aviation sector is entering the next phase. This is a natural development of the market.

Albers said, ‘I want competition. It is good to have competition, but it will be such a competition, which is going along with the growth in the market. IndiGo has a fleet of over 300 aircraft and currently operates flights to 76 domestic and 26 international destinations. The airline has also recently announced flights to two more domestic destinations Nashik and Dharamshala. He said that India’s aviation market is very vibrant. It is improving very strongly. IndiGo has made a strong comeback and India’s economic growth is helping it to grow further.

Meanwhile, Vinay Malhotra, Head of International Sales of Indigo, said that Indigo has placed an order for 500 more aircraft. Also, the company has joined hands with Turkish Airlines to increase its flights in Europe. He said that the airline currently operates around 1,800 flights daily. Of these, 10 per cent are on international routes. With the delivery of the aircraft, the company will increase the number of its flights on international routes.
