Air India will buy 250 aircraft from Airbus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the deal historic

New Delhi. Air India has announced the purchase of 250 aircraft from Airbus. Of these, 40 will be large size aircraft. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran gave this information on Tuesday. Describing the deal as historic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it shows the strength of the relationship between India and France. The airline is preparing to expand its fleet and operations. This is the first time in 17 years that Air India is going to place orders for purchase of aircraft. This will be Air India’s first order after coming under the ownership of the Tata group.

The Tata Group-owned airline will buy 40 widebody A350s and 210 smallbody aircraft from Airbus. In an ‘online’ meeting, Chandrasekaran said that a letter of intent has been signed with Airbus for the purchase of these aircraft. The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, among others. Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata, Air India CEO Wilson Campbell and Airbus CEO G Faury were present at the event. Large size aircraft will be used for long distance flights. Flights of more than 16 hours are called long distance flights. Tata group had acquired Air India in January last year.

After this acquisition, Tata Group is taking various measures to grow this airline. The airline had last placed an order for 111 aircraft in 2005. Of these, 68 aircraft were ordered by Boeing and 43 by Airbus. The Tata group had completed one year of acquisition of Air India on 27 January. At the time, the airline had said it was finalizing a historic order to purchase new aircraft to drive future growth.
