The team said the abnormalities in the pipeline that leaked ammonia were ‘well below dangerous levels’ and were immediately brought down to zero. The Committee noted the safety testing conducted by the company for the operational condition of the ammonia pipeline and external certification obtained from a certified inspection agency.
Ammonia safety systems at the Chennai based fertilizer manufacturing unit of Coromandel International Limited are ‘robust’ enough to deal with any kind of emergency and the pipelines equipped with multi-layered safety systems are regularly inspected. The company gave this information on Saturday. A high-level technical team (committee) appointed by the Tamil Nadu government conducted a detailed inspection of the ammonia management system on December 27 and submitted its report, the company said in a statement. The team included experts and officials from state pollution control boards, IIT academicians and environmental agencies. Earlier, ammonia gas had leaked from the company’s fertilizer manufacturing unit located in Ennore, North Chennai.
Recently several people were hospitalized after an ammonia gas leak at the unit. The Murugappa Group firm also has similar fertilizer plants in Kakinada and Visakhapatnam. “The investigation team has approved the emergency response actions taken by Coromandel International Limited and directed the resumption of operations after conducting the necessary inspections and ensuring the safety of the ammonia pipeline and apparatus,” according to the statement. On the condition of residents of neighboring areas that were reportedly affected due to the gas leak, the company said, “The residents of the neighboring communities who were taken to nearby hospitals have been discharged and are not in danger.”
