Analysis: This year there will be a tough challenge from Hollywood and South, will Shahrukh and Salman avoid Bollywood’s crisis?

‘Bollywood lagged behind last year’
Talking about Bollywood’s poor performance last year, producer and film business analyst Girish Johar says, ‘In the year 2019 before Corona, Hindi box office earnings were around Rs 5200 crore. In this, about 70 percent of Bollywood and the remaining 30 percent included Hindi dubbed films of Hollywood and other languages. But after Corona, the total collection of Hindi box office in open theaters in 2022 was around 3600 crores. Which is about 30 percent less than before. The matter of concern in that too is that the share of Bollywood in this was only 50 per cent. Last year, films dubbed in Hindi from Hollywood earned 26 percent, while films dubbed in Hindi from South captured the remaining 24 percent. Looking at the tremendous lineup of Hollywood and South films in the year 2023, Girish says that there is every hope that in this year 2023 we will reach the situation of 2019. We have a very good line up of big star films this year. Earlier it seemed that the share of Bollywood in the total earnings this year would further reduce, but now the bumper success of Pathan has raised hopes that the competition at the box office is going to be tough.

‘Film industry people are changing’
Talking about the exciting line-up of Bollywood films in the new year, noted film producer Anand Pandit says, ‘The coming year is going to be a lot of fun. I hope all is well this year. Due to Kovid, the trend of OTT has increased a lot and people’s thinking about the content has changed a lot. Actually, till last year OTT was paying a lot of money to filmmakers, then people started making films for OTT. As such, he made films as a project and paid less attention to its content. So two years were difficult. I think now this time has passed and good films will come in the coming time. I see the coming time as an opportunity for Bollywood. Of course South, Hollywood and now Pathan have shown that if you make films properly, your film can also do 300-400 crores business. Now even Bollywood is feeling that business is there, we just have to adjust. You cannot ask the audience to adjust.
