New Delhi (Best Hindu News): The common people, who are facing the brunt of inflation, are going to get another blow on April 1 and now people may have to spend more money for essential medicines. From April 1, the prices of many essential medicines, including painkillers and antibiotics, are going to increase. Explain that a 12 percent increase in the prices of essential medicines has been fixed.
From medicines for pain killers, anti-infection and heart diseases to antibiotics, the prices of medicines are among those whose prices are going to increase from April 1. The government has allowed pharmaceutical companies to increase drug prices in line with changes in the Annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI). Medicines whose prices will go up include paracetamol, which is used for common fever and pain.
According to media reports, the price of about 900 medicines, including painkillers, anti-infectives, antibiotics and heart medicines, may increase by more than 12 percent. It is to be noted that this is the second consecutive year when the increase in prices of scheduled drugs will be higher than that of non-scheduled drugs. Scheduled medicines are part of the National List of Essential Medicines.
Significantly, the drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is permitted to revise or increase the price of scheduled drugs every year on or before April 1, as per the Annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI) of the previous calendar year. Clause 16 of the Scheduled Drug Price Control Order 2013 lays down the rules for revising and increasing the price. Under this rule, NPPA revises the prices of medicines every year and the new prices are implemented from 1 April.
