A man from Flitwick in Bedfordshire, UK, has credited his Apple Watch for saving his life by detecting an undiagnosed heart condition. Adam Croft woke up to an alert on his Apple device alerting him to a condition called atrial fibrillation. He initially dismissed the alert, but the next day he experienced dizziness and nearly fainted. He then checked his watch again and realized that he needed medical attention.
Croft called the UK medical helpline, 111, which advised him to go to hospital within an hour. After additional tests at Bedford Hospital, he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The doctors put him on blood thinners and advised that he would undergo a cardioversion procedure to restore a regular heart rhythm.
Croft claimed that he would not have gone to the hospital if he had not received the alert from his Apple Watch. He said the watch had previously picked up a “little flutter” of the heart, but he hadn’t experienced any symptoms in months. The incident highlights the potential of wearable technology such as the Apple Watch to detect and alert individuals of underlying health conditions.
