New Delhi: Sunil Subramaniam always regretted that despite being one of the best left-arm spinners in the country in the nineties, he could not make a place in the Indian team, but his disciple Ravichandran Ashwin has definitely healed his wounds with his achievements.
57 year old Subramaniam taught Ashwin the art of spin bowling in his early days. He says that this experienced off-spinner of India was born to play Test cricket.
He told PTI in a video, ‘I was confident that he would become a good Test bowler. First he became a match winner for the state and then for the country. At that time it was difficult to say that his journey would be so long. When the journey started, it seemed that his career would be long.
He said, “To be honest, we did not think that he would play a hundred Tests but I knew that we had got a good Test cricketer.” Despite his successful career in first-class cricket, he is best known as Ashwin’s childhood coach. And they don’t even regret it.
He said, “The journey began when I met him in 2007 at the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association bowlers’ camp. We had to find the next generation of bowlers.” He said, ”He went from first-class cricket to Test cricket and his bowling kept improving. I think he was born to play Test cricket.” Looking at Ashwin’s excellent form even at the age of 37, Subramaniam doesn’t think he will say goodbye to the game in the near future.
He said, “I think he can play international cricket for three to four more years.” He made his debut at the age of 25. There is a lot of competition in Indian cricket and India’s bowling attack has become very strong in the last ten years. His bowling has been the pivot of the Indian attack in the last nine years. He has stability and doesn’t get distracted by other things. This is a lesson for the youth that anything can be achieved by focusing on sports.
