Officials said that Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Sitharaman and requested the GST authority to waive off the additional burden of 12 percent GST on the rent of rooms and hostels for students living as ‘paying guests’. .
He said that the Chief Minister said in the letter that the recent order by the GST Advance Ruling Authority to pay 12 per cent GST would cause hardship to the parents of the poor and lower middle class, as the poor and lower class are already suffering from the brunt of inflation. Officials said that the Chief Minister has written to the Finance Minister that this decision of the Authority is also likely to force many poor meritorious students to return to their native places. He informed that the Chief Minister has requested the Finance Minister to intervene on this subject at the level of the Central Government and free the students living in hostels from the additional burden of 12 percent GST as before and direct the concerned authorities for the same.
