New Delhi : Cybercriminals sometimes hack the websites of institutions and ministries, even then they steal the data of an app and make the mobile user a victim of their fraud. This time the target of these cybercriminals are the users using the Rail Yatri app. It is reported that about 3.1 crore data of mobile users using the Rail Yatri app is being sold on the dark web. It contains important information like users’ names, email IDs, phone numbers and their location, which are being sold through the dark web. After this matter came to light, the police started investigating.
Rail Yatra app’s 3.1 crore data leak
Rail Yatri Mobile App is an authorized app of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation), through which booking of train tickets, PNR status information and guest house booking is done. According to a report in the English newspaper Hindustan Times, a set of estimated 31 million data points from the Rail Yatri mobile app was put up for sale on the dark web. A hacker identified as Unit 82 gave information about this by sharing a post. The hacker claimed that the data was collected after hacking in December 2022. Unit 82 also shared a link where they can be contacted to buy the data key.
Fear of misuse of collected data
The news channel ABP quoted experts as saying that especially after getting data points like phone numbers, the scope for its misuse increases to a great extent. These numbers can be used to trick people into committing crimes such as sextortion, part-time job rackets or financial fraud by posing as police officers. Apart from this, name, email id and phone number can be used to create forged documents. A data point is any type of data, including names, email ids, addresses and phone numbers of users.
Data being sold for $300
According to Hindustan Times report, the data stolen from the Rail Yatri app has been put up for sale on the breached forum. It has been told in the post made on the forum that there are a total of 3,10,62,673 data points in it. This entire data is about 12.33 gigabytes. The bio also states that Unit82 is based in Israel and is a member of the Breached forum since August 6, 2022. When Hindustan Times contacted Unit 82 on Sunday night, an offer was made to sell the data for $300. Unit 82 called it a discounted price for journalists.
