‘Bhagavad Gita’ insulted in Oppenheimer, MIB approaches makers to remove objectionable scene from film

Oppenheimer was one of the most awaited films of the year which has now released. The whole world including India was waiting for the release of the film. The film finally hit the screens on 21 July. The film was very special for the Indian as the film was about Oppenheimer who led the team that made the atomic bomb.

Sharing a statement by the Save Culture Save India Foundation, Uday Mahurkar, Information Commissioner, Government of India, tweeted, “Everyone is perplexed how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could clear a film with this scene. Bhagavad Gita, a divine gift to human civilization by Lord Shri Krishna, is one of the most revered scriptures of Hinduism. The Gita has been an inspiration to countless sanyasis, brahmacharis and legends who lead a life of austerity and selflessly do noble deeds.” are.”

“We do not know the motivation and reasoning behind this unnecessary look at the life of a scientist,” the statement said. “A scene in the film shows a man reciting the Bhagavad Gita loudly while having sex with a woman.”

The scene in question is where the main character Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) quotes a line from the Bhagavad Gita while making love to Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). Save Culture Save India Foundation further said in the release, “We believe that if you (Christopher Nolan) remove this scene and take necessary steps to win the hearts of Hindus, it will go a long way in establishing your reputation as a sensitive human being and gifting you the friendship of billions of good people.”

“We, on behalf of billions of Hindus and the eternal tradition of transforming lives by the revered Gita, urge them to maintain the dignity of their revered scripture and make every effort to remove this scene from their films worldwide,” the statement said. Some Twitter users have called for a boycott of the film. One user said, “I am calling for a boycott of the movie Oppenheimer. I just found out that it has a very objectionable scene involving the Bhagavad Gita. I won’t repeat it here, but it contains something obvious.”

Although Christopher Nolan focuses on the Manhattan Project during World War II that led to the bomb, and America’s interest in nuclear program policy in the years following the war, Oppenheimer also delves into the physicist’s personal life. According to reports, ‘Oppenheimer’ is director Christopher Nolan’s first R-rated film in 20 years. But in India, after the studio cut some scenes to reduce its length, the censor board gave the film a U/A rating, according to news reports. India’s censor board also came under fire recently after some users pointed out controversial dialogues in the movie ‘Adipurush’. The makers of ‘Adipurush’ later made some changes in the dialogues amid criticism of disrespect towards the Hindu epic Ramayana.
