Big change to YouTube shorts to reduce scam attempts

San Francisco: To reduce spam and scam attempts, Google-owned YouTube has announced that starting August 31, links in shorts comments and shorts descriptions will no longer be clickable. The platform said on a support page on Thursday, “Starting August 31, 2023, links in Shorts Comments, Shorts Description and Vertkill Live Feed will not be clickable, this change will be implemented gradually.”
‘Because abuse is on the rise, we have taken preventive measures to protect users from being misled by scammers and spammers through links.’ It also mentions that clickable social media icons will no longer appear from all desktop channel banners.
Because links are an important way for creators to share information and recommend products/brands to their communities, YouTube has announced new ways to showcase important links. ‘Starting August 23, 2023, viewers on mobile and desktop will see links on creators’ channel profiles near the subscribe button.’
The video-sharing platform further revealed that by the end of next month, it will begin offering a secure way for creators to direct viewers from Shorts to their other YouTube content. On Tuesday, the Google-owned platform began testing a new For You section, which will make channel homepages more personalized for individual viewers and show a range of content from that channel based on the videos they’ve already watched.
