Onion Buffer Stock: There is a great news for middle class families. This time the taste of the food will not spoil because of the festive season. The central government has stocked 20 percent more onions for the buffer stock in the current financial year. The government has made a buffer stock of three lakh tonnes of onions this year. Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Singh told that the Central Government and the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) are working together to save onions from spoilage for a long time. He told that in 2022-23, the government had kept 2.51 lakh tonnes of onions for buffer stock. The buffer stock maintained by the government serves under the Price Stabilization Fund in times of short supply.
The pressure remains till the arrival of Kharif crop
Secretary Rohit Singh said that the central government has made a huge increase in the buffer stock this year so that people do not face problems due to expensive onions during the festive season. The government has stocked three lakh tonnes of onions. There is no shortage of onions. The onion procured for buffer stock is of the recently concluded rabi season. Presently, sowing of Kharif onion is going on and its arrival starts in October. The secretary said, usually, onion prices remain under pressure in the retail market for 20 days or till the arrival of Kharif crop in the market. But this time there will be no such problem. According to the demand and stock, onion will be gradually released in the market by the government.
Onion will be preserved with Cobalt-60
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and BARC are conducting tests on onions. Secretary Rohit Singh told that as an experiment for this, 150 tonnes of onion preservation is being used in Lasalgaon, Maharashtra through gamma radiation from Cobalt-60. With the new experiment, onions will be preserved for longer days. Madan, an onion wholesaler in the Pandra Bazar Samiti, Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, says that the demand for onions is high from August to the last week of October. But the supply dwindles. The reason for this is the shortage in the market due to sowing and onion spoilage. Meanwhile, onion sold at Rs 25 to 30 per kg reaches Rs 50 to 60 per kg or even more.
New crop comes in November
Santosh Kumar Singh, a trader of the Pandra Bazar Committee of Ranchi, told that the supply of onions first starts from Bengal and Jharkhand in the plains of Ganga. After this, the local onion comes in the market. Meanwhile, traders also have to face problems due to the shortage of onions. Due to less arrival, the prices increase. In such a situation, the number of customers decreases. Meanwhile, if it rains at the time of harvesting of peonies, then there is a problem in the arrival. It directly affects the market.
Cold storage made for local farmers
Retired Dean Agriculture and Agronomist Dr. MS Yadav of Birsa Agricultural University says that people have to face the problem of expensive onions every year. The best solution for this is to increase the production of local onion crop by at least double. Along with this, preserve the crop for maximum time. For this, the farmers will have to be provided with high quality seeds along with fertilizers etc. At the same time, arrangements for cold storage will have to be made to store onions. As informed by Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Singh today, the Central Government and the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) are working together to save onions from spoilage for a long time. If this happens, then there is hope of getting relief from onion prices in future.
