Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced that three Centers of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in top educational institutions and 100 laboratories to develop applications using 5G services in engineering institutes will be set up. The Finance Minister announced this in his budget speech in the Lok Sabha. He said, “Three Centers of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence will be set up in top educational institutions. Leading industry houses will partner to conduct interdisciplinary research, develop cutting edge applications and solve problems in the areas of agriculture, health, sustainable cities.
Sitharaman said that a total of 100 labs will be set up in engineering institutions in collaboration with various authorities, regulators, banks and other businesses to develop applications using 5G services. For a new range of opportunities, business models and employability, the labs will cover applications such as smart classrooms, precision farming, efficient transport systems and healthcare, inter alia, he said. The Minister announced the setting up of a National Digital Library for Children and Adolescents to make quality books available to them through a variety of tools across regions, languages, subjects and levels.
uHe informed that the States would be encouraged to provide infrastructure for them to set up physical libraries at Panchayat and Ward levels and access National Digital Library resources. The Finance Minister said that in the next three years, 38,800 teachers and other staff would be recruited in 740 model residential Eklavya schools, which would benefit 3.5 lakh tribal students.
The Minister informed that in order to promote the reading culture and to meet the learning loss during the time of pandemic, the National Book Trust, Children’s Book Trust and other sources will make available books of extra-curricular subjects in regional languages and English in these physical libraries.
