Chinese actions on the border since 2017 have made it clear that India faces a much bigger problem in the next decade. Our defense budget must reflect this fundamental change in the security environment.

India’s defense sector is in the limelight ahead of the Union Budget being presented in Parliament on February 1. Experts expect a significant hike in the defense sector in this year’s budget. The main reason behind this is the current situation. Border issues with China and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine are some of the major factors on which the government will need to increase while allocating funds to this sector. Chinese actions on the border since 2017 have made it clear that India faces a much bigger problem in the next decade. Our defense budget must reflect this fundamental change in the security environment.

Why there should be a significant increase in the defense budget

1. India has been facing tensions along its border with China on more than one occasion during 2017 and even before. Chinese infiltration attempts have increased especially in the areas of North East from Ladakh near Bhutan.

2. India’s border with Pakistan has always been volatile.

3. Kashmir needs strong defense against cross border infiltration.

4. The Pakistan-China highway passes through Indian territory, which needs to be monitored and ultimately controlled.

5. The Quad wants India to play a stronger role in protecting the maritime trade routes passing through the Indian Ocean.

India’s defense budget will increase?

Rachin’s defense budget is three times that of India’s defense budget of Rs 5.25 lakh crore (about $70 billion). Its total defense budget is $209 billion. Defense experts believe that the defense budget is likely to be around Rs 6.6 lakh crore. Experts say that “it is possible that this could be even more so considering the importance of strengthening the country’s defense forces which has been increasing over the years with the advent of certain weapon systems and the need to equip the military to deal with ever-emerging threats in the neighbourhood.” The Air Force will require the highest allocation for capital equipment, followed by the Navy and then the Army which has lagged behind in being adequately armed with the latest weapon systems. Government’s Make in India initiative for defense products Defense sector has been in limelight due to this.It has opened doors for Indian defense companies which are getting orders from Government of India and foreign companies.
