What is Economic Survey Report?
The Economic Survey Report is released by the Finance Ministry. It was first introduced in India before the budget in the year 1950-51. Broadly speaking, this report contains an account of economic progress and performance on the targets set by the government in the previous budget. In this, all the main data related to the country’s economy is kept in the Parliament. The report gives complete details of the trends in issues like inflation rate, infrastructure, agriculture and foreign exchange reserves in a financial year. Besides, the report also informs the Parliament about the challenges facing the country. This report is prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs of the Finance Ministry under the supervision of the Chief Economic Advisor. The government has been following the tradition of dividing the entire report into two parts. In the first, complete and updated details of the current economic situation of the country are given. Whereas, the second part covers issues like health, poverty, climate change and human development index.
Why is the report not coming?
The budget presented in Parliament is an interim budget. This means that the country’s expenditure will be accounted for till the elections and formation of the new government. The full budget will be presented after the elections when the government is formed. According to the rule, the economic report does not come before the interim budget. However, the report titled The Indian Economy: A Review presented by the government is to some extent equivalent to the Economic Survey. But the government has clarified that the report has been prepared by the office of Chief Economic Advisor V Ananth Nageswaran, but it is not an economic review report.
