New Delhi, 03 December (Hindustan Reporter). The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has raised questions and expressed concern over the investment of some big companies and China in India’s travel and tourism sector. CAT has demanded from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to investigate the business model of these companies working in the field of travel and tourism.
CAT said in a statement issued on Sunday that in the travel and tourism sector in the country, a few big companies, especially those with investment as well as control of Chinese money, have almost eliminated the business of travel agents in this sector. Expressing fear that the security of the data collected by them may also be in danger, CAT has requested Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to investigate the business model of these big companies working in the field of travel and tourism. It should be ensured that the data collected by them is not being misused. Along with this, it should also be seen whether unhealthy competition is taking place in this sector?
Praveen Khandelwal, national general secretary of trade organization CAT, strongly raised this issue and said that the travel and tourism business in India was being done by more than 10 lakh travel agents spread across the country, which also provided employment to a large number of people. Used to do. In the last few years, with the help of Chinese and other foreign investments, a few companies have completely taken over this business. Now they do all the bookings through their portal. A large amount of foreign money has been invested in his company, hence this business is now limited to only a few big hands. This business is now working as a monopoly and they have collected huge data of the people of India.
In this regard, Khandelwal, while referring to the travel and tourism sector company MakeMyTrip, said that due to the huge amount of Chinese money invested in this company, out of the 10 directors on the board of the company, 5 are from the Chinese company Trip.com. Which is controlled from Shanghai. Another company from Trip.com is Sky Scanner, which compares cheap tickets for air travel between airlines and travel agents. He said that it indirectly benefits MakeMyTrip by creating an environment of unhealthy competition in the market, due to which the possibility of competition has almost been eliminated. This is a one of its kind cartel, which has gradually captured a large part of the Indian travel and tourism business.
CAT General Secretary, expressing fear of misuse of passengers’ data on MakeMyTrip, has demanded an investigation from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. It is noteworthy that a large number of people book air tickets every day on MakeMyTrip’s portal, due to which data of a large number of people is collected by them.
