Gandhinagar. Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday said the Center is waiting for separate proposals from Taiwan’s Foxconn and Vedanta in different business sectors for setting up semiconductor plants in the country. Earlier this month, Foxconn had backed out of industrialist Anil Agarwal’s proposal to set up a semiconductor manufacturing plant in a joint venture with Vedanta. The Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company said it is working to set up a separate semiconductor unit in India.
Responding to a question on the semiconductor issue, Chandrashekhar said, “Two private partners had proposed a joint venture to set up a semiconductor plant in India. They now believe that they will make different proposals. We will wait for their proposals and assess accordingly. “What the country has achieved in the last 15 months in the semiconductor sector was not achieved in the last 70 years,” Chandrashekhar said at the inauguration ceremony of the six-day exhibition on cutting-edge technologies related to semiconductors under Semicon India-2023.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The minister told reporters, “When various countries made a lot of progress in the field of semiconductors, at that time our country either failed to take advantage of this opportunity or was ignored. Different governments have either neglected this sector or failed in different ways. “He said,” This is the first time that successful efforts were made in this direction. What we could not achieve in the last 70 years, we have achieved in 15 years. ”The Union Minister of State said that Gujarat is ahead of other states in terms of manufacturing semiconductor ecosystem. American chip maker Micron is going to make a big investment in the state.
He said the semiconductor and electronics sectors would play an important role in the next decade, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called India’s decade. He said, “…not only in Gujarat but across the country for the first time in many years, enrollment in electronics engineering, interest in hardware and startups in the hardware and semiconductor sector are on the rise. This is a good thing for the country and Gujarat is becoming a major center for semiconductors.
According to a government statement, the six-day exhibition aims to educate visitors about the complex manufacturing processes of semiconductors and the remarkable progress achieved in this dynamic sector. During Prime Minister Modi’s recent US visit, President Joe Biden announced the setting up of a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facility by Micron Technology in India. Later, the Gujarat government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 22,500 crore with American chip maker Micron to set up an ATMP facility in the state’s Sanand. The Prime Minister will inaugurate SEMCON India on July 28, 2023.
