Center regrets non-utilisation of funds of State Animal Husbandry Departments

In an event organized on the occasion of World Veterinary Day, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Purushottam Rupala stressed on registration of births and deaths of animals to have real-time data.
The Center has lamented the non-utilisation of funds meant for state animal husbandry departments for the development of the sector and asked them to spend the funds for implementing projects. In an event organized on the occasion of World Veterinary Day, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Purushottam Rupala stressed on registration of births and deaths of animals to have real-time data. World Veterinary Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April in honor of people in the veterinary field.
Rupala said that the government conducts regular census of animals but at present there is no system for registration of birth and death of animals like humans. He said that this is a drawback in this area. He insisted to work on bridging this gap. He said that there should be some scientific way of ascertaining the survival of animals as the latest data would benefit all concerned and help in achieving higher growth. The livestock count includes all domestic animals. There are 16 species of cattle in these. As per 2019 census, there are 53.67 crore animals in the country.
