The early days of Dhirubhai Ambani were full of struggle. Due to financial crisis in the family, he did not complete his education. In 1949, at the age of only 17, he went to Yemen to join his brother Ramaniklal. There he worked at a petrol pump of A Bassi and Company.
Not only did Dhirubhai’s hard work and honesty help in establishing Reliance, he also had the trust and support of many of his loved ones. One of them was Champaklal Damani. Champaklal Damani was Dhirubhai’s cousin.
After returning from Yemen, Dhirubhai decided that he would not work anymore. But he did not have enough money to start the business. In such a situation, he along with his cousin Champaklal started the business of spices and sugar. With this, the foundation of Reliance Commercial Corporation was laid.
Everything is not normal all the time in business. The partnership between Dhirubhai and Champaklal Damani ended in 1965, as both went their separate ways. Ambani was interested in risk and new change. But Damani was clashing with a different vision regarding business.
The partnership between Dhirubhai Ambani and Champaklal Damani played a big role in the genesis of Reliance Industries. Its result is visible to the whole world today.
