Coal, lignite plants to source 40 per cent power from green energy

The power ministry has asked new coal or lignite based thermal power plants to meet a minimum of 40 per cent of their capacity by installing renewable energy units or purchase an equal amount of green energy. The Ministry of Power revised the Electricity Tariff Policy 2016 under the Electricity Act, 2003 at the beginning of the month. Through this change, it has been made mandatory for new power generation plants based on coal or lignite to have 40 percent of their electricity from green energy.

According to the notification, this provision will be applicable only to coal and lignite based plants starting operations after April 1, 2023. According to this, these plants will have to meet at least 40 percent of their total capacity by installing renewable energy units or else they will have to buy green energy of equal capacity. New thermal power projects starting operation from April 2023 to March 2025 will have to generate 40 per cent electricity from renewable sources by April 1, 2025. On the other hand, projects starting operations after April 1, 2025, will have to source 40 percent power from renewable sources till the start of operations. This step of the government has been taken towards the ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2030. India’s renewable energy capacity stood at 1,21,549.52 MW at the end of January.
