ran only two days in the first week
When this train started, it used to run only two days a week. Its initial stoppages were only Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar. Then this superfast train used to complete the journey of 1,662 km in 23 hours 30 minutes. In those days it used to leave Howrah at 17.15 hrs and reach Chennai at 16.45 hrs the next day. In return it left Chennai at 09.00 hrs and reached Howrah at 08.30 hrs the next day. Later the number of its stoppages was increased. Stops were made at Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Khurda Road and Brahmpur. With the increase in stoppages, the train time also increased by three hours.
450 kilometer journey non-stop
The Coromandel Express runs non-stop between Vijayawada and Chennai in Andhra Pradesh. That is, during the distance of about 450 km, this train does not stop even once. It goes on continuously for six hours. Even between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, this train stops at only two places, Eluru and Rajahmundry. Apart from this it stops at Brahmapur, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur. This train has five stops in Andhra Pradesh, seven in Odisha and only two stops in West Bengal.

Train No. 12841, Up Coromandel Express departs Shalimar at 15.20 hrs. It reaches Chennai Central at around 16:50 the next day. In order to return from Chennai to Kolkata, train number 12842 departs from Chennai Central at 7 am. This train reaches Kolkata’s Shalimar Railway Station at 10.40 am the next day.
Just happened to be a victim of an accident
Last Friday i.e. on the evening of June 3, 2023, the Coromandel Express had become a victim of the accident. The accident took place at around 7 pm at Bahnaga Bazar station in Odisha, about 255 km from Howrah. At least 288 passengers died and more than 1,000 were injured in the accident. Earlier, in February 2009 also this train was a victim of accident. The accident took place near Jajpur Keonjhar road, 120 km north of Bhubaneswar. In that accident, 16 passengers were killed while 161 were injured. Then 13 coaches of this train going to Chennai were derailed.
