Decision on import management system regarding laptops, tablets after assessment of data: Official

The government will take a decision in September on the existing import management system on some IT hardware products like laptops and tablets after assessing the import data. An officer gave this information. India implemented an import management system in October last year. Under this, importers of these products will have to take approval from the government. The objective of this system is to monitor imports of laptops, tablets and computers into the country without harming the market supply or creating a cumbersome licensing regime. Importers are allowed to apply for multiple authorized approvals and these approvals will be valid till September 30, 2024.
These approvals will be issued to them for any number of consignments for import till September next year. On the scenario after September 2024, the official said, “We are monitoring the imports, we are looking at the data. So whatever data comes, further steps will be based on that.” On November 1, 2023, the government approved 110 out of a total of 111 applications, including Apple, Dell and Lenovo, which applied almost on the first day of implementation of the new system. Permission was sought to import these IT hardware products worth $10 billion.
“The government has already allowed imports in excess of the annual import limit,” the official said. So which companies are there, what kind of supplies are coming, this will have to be considered before taking a decision.” India is also promoting domestic manufacturing of these items and has taken several steps such as introducing a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing.
