New Delhi. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that he is in talks with several companies for the development of economically viable electric highways. Addressing an event of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Gadkari said that sustainable development is the ultimate goal and for this there is a need to develop low-cost, pollution-free and indigenous technology in the transport sector. He called upon the big companies to come forward to create sustainable business models.
He said, “Only yesterday I discussed with Tata and some other parties about making an economically viable electric highway.” Gadkari had introduced the concept of development of electric highways some time ago. Gadkari said, “The way our cities are developing, we will eventually need to amend our urban laws. In a city like Bangalore, people take two hours to reach office.
He said that there is a need to convince people that things like making hydrogen from water are possible and our talent and knowledge can be used for this work. He said that adoption of circular economy would go a long way in reducing manufacturing cost and reducing imports. Reusing metals such as copper and aluminum can cut the cost of manufacturing vehicle components by 20-25 percent.
