Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee used to have a deep connection with Indian politics. He wanted to make Jammu and Kashmir a complete and integral part of India. At that time Jammu and Kashmir had a separate flag and a separate constitution. There the Chief Minister (Vazire-Azam) was called Prime Minister. Giving shape to the dream of a united India, he struggled to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and implement one country-one mark-one constitution. He was known for his different ideology. He always raised his voice for Hindutva. With the resolution of united India, Dr. Mukherjee sacrificed his life. The nation is paying real tribute to Dr. Mukherjee by removing Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and implementing One Country-One Mark-One Constitution, giving shape to Dr. Mukherjee’s dream of Akhand Bharat.

Dr. Mukherjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, worshiper of humanity in true sense, skilled politician, supporter of nationalism and theorist. Whenever there is talk of India’s unity, integrity and nationalism, then the contribution made by Dr. Mukherjee in the national life will definitely be discussed. In August 1952, at a huge rally in Jammu, he expressed his resolve that either I will get you the Indian Constitution or else I will sacrifice my life for the purpose. He challenged the then Nehru government and remained firm on his determination. To fulfill his resolution, he set out on a journey to Jammu and Kashmir in 1953 without obtaining a permit. As soon as he reached there, he was arrested and put under house arrest. He died under mysterious circumstances on 23 June 1953. Dr. Mukherjee continued to respect and protect the symbols of the nation’s faith. He always emphasized on the manifestation of indigenous consciousness, indigenous way of life, indigenous costumes and indigenous culture in the interest of the country. He was a courageous, fearless and fighting warrior who followed the national religion in true sense. Whenever the voice of construction will be raised in life, the torch of man will be lit, the eyes of truth will open and there will be talk of unbroken nationalism, the contributions of Dr. Mukherjee will always be remembered.

Much has been written on the political dimension of Dr. Mukherjee’s personality, but it appears that much more remains to be written. His personality is very important apart from his political life. His personality was great. He was an educationist, an administrator, a social worker, a pioneer of democracy and a politician. He made his best contribution in different roles. The movement of Kashmir was not only to protect the unity of India on the basis of nationalism, but also to protect the civil rights, the soul of democracy. His sacrifice made it clear that how secure are the fundamental rights of the citizens of India!

Following the footsteps of Dr. Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ever since he took over the reins of the country, has been working to make Kashmir an integral part of India, and spread Indian culture around the world considering education and culture as the basis. He is playing the role of a pioneer. Modi is not only showing the new way of life to the world community by making the knowledge of Indian culture a medium, but is committed to once again establish India as a Jagatguru. This fact came to the fore in the recent visit to America and Egypt. Modi has also put Dr. Mukherjee’s vision and resolutions in front of the world many times in the form of ‘My Idea of India’. Modi has presented Dr. Mukherjee’s comprehensive vision and his dreams for India with fairness and transparency. He has not only effectively presented his ideology and dreams in the country and the world, but has also taken steps towards fulfilling those unfulfilled dreams.

Dr. Mukherjee was a strong proponent of the notion that culturally we are all one. That’s why he was a staunch opponent of partition on the basis of religion. They believed that the situation related to partition was due to historical and social reasons. He believed that the fundamental truth is that we are all one. There is no difference between us. We are all of the same blood. We have one language, one culture and one heritage. But these views of his were propagated in a different way by the then leaders of other political parties. Despite this, immense love and support for him increased in the hearts of the common people. In August, 1946, the Muslim League took the path of war and there was a fierce barbaric inhuman massacre in Calcutta. At that time the Congress leadership was collectively terrorised.

The great thoughts and determination provided by Dr. Mukherjee creates the vision of a Tejaswi Bharat nation. Dr. Mukherjee’s life was full of struggle, due to his nationalist policies, he had to face many opposition and neglect, but he remained firm on his resolution. According to him, India is Karmabhoomi, Dharmabhoomi and Punyabhoomi, the life here is ideal for the world. India is not a state, it is a sovereign nation. It was not made a nation, but it is an eternal nation. Dr. Mukherjee had not only political power but also spiritual power. He was continuously committed to make India strong and prosperous. This is the reason that he was attracted towards the nationalism of Savarkar and joined the Hindu Mahasabha. The environment of Bengal was being polluted by the politics of the Muslim League. There was a situation of communal division. The British government was encouraging the communal people. In such odd circumstances, he took it upon himself to ensure that the Hindus of Bengal were not neglected. With his distinctive strategy, he completely foiled the Muslim League’s attempts to partition Bengal.

Dr. Mukherjee joined the first cabinet of India on the request of Gandhiji and Sardar Patel. He was entrusted with the responsibility of an important department like industry. As a member of the Constituent Assembly and Provincial Parliament and as a Union Minister, he soon made his special place. But due to his nationalist thinking, differences with other leaders remained equal. As a result, considering the commitment of national interests as his topmost priority, he resigned from the cabinet. He formed a new party which at that time was the largest party in opposition. In October 1951, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh emerged.

Dr. Mukherjee was a great educationist, he had a firm belief from his student days that India can move forward continuously in the world as ‘Jagat Guru’ only through education with spirituality and science. The specialty of his life is that he had a beautiful harmony with spiritualism, tolerance, human qualities, scientific outlook and deep understanding. This trait was reflected throughout his life as an educationist and parliamentarian. He considered the service of mankind as the true worship of God. Dr. Mukherjee’s whole life was a mixture of specialties and eccentricities. He became the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of just 33. He addressed convocation in more than 20 universities. He was as capable a politician as he was an equally effective writer, his abundant literature is guiding India even today. Humble salutations to the advocate of equality and true hero of nationalism on his birth anniversary!
